What's the best MIC for you (Condenser vs Dynamic & USB vs XLR) - fifine AM6 vs AM8

We are spending more time engaging with our community and viewers digitally by connecting with them through live streaming, podcasting or gaming. With so much being done virtually, having a good-quality mic has become essential to growing and connecting with your followers.

fiifne has sent me the AM6 and the AM8 and I will be comparing the two as one of them is an XLR/USB Combo MIC with a dynamic Capsule while the other is a USB Condensor MIC. Despite the naming convention the AM6 and AM8 are targeted towards different users.

Condenser vs Dynamic

Sensitivity

Condenser mics are very sensitive as they capture a broader frequency range with more detail ranging from the subtle nuances of your voice to the hum of your computer fan and light scratches on your desk. This makes them fantastic for studio environments, where the room is sound-treated to get rid of any unwanted noise and you want to capture the full sound for processing later. They require 48v phantom power which greatly amplifies their ability to pick up subtle details and a wider range of frequencies. This makes condenser mics less ideal for a typical home setup with potential background noise and reverb you can expect from untreated rooms. 

Dynamic mics are more focused, primarily capturing your voice and minimising distractions. They have a thin Diaphragm that vibrates in response to your voice, so you need to speak closely (Fifine recommends 2-6 inches) for optimal clarity. This usually means investing in a boom arm for comfort and good-quality sound.

Sound Profile

When it comes to sound profile, condenser mics offer a brighter, crisper tone that captures every detail of your voice. This is great for post-processing, where you have more control over the final sound. However, dynamic mics deliver a warmer, 'broadcast-like' quality, often described as a 'radio voice.'  They emphasize the mid and low frequencies of your voice, which can sound instantly more pleasing and professional.

Ideal Uses

Condenser mics like the Fifine AM6 offer flexibility – fifine suggests a 6-12 inch distance for clear voice pickup. This works surprisingly well as the AM6 performs well even without a boom arm. If desk space is limited and you don't want the bulk of a boom, the AM6 has a clear advantage.

On the other hand, the Fifine AM8's dynamic capsule requires you to be much closer (2-6 inches) for optimal sound.  This practically means you'll need a boom arm for both comfort and ideal sound quality. Moving further away will quickly start to make your voice sound distant, especially in untreated rooms.

USB vs. XLR

Another factor to consider is the out-of-the-box simplicity of using USB vs the Audio Quality advantages an XLR setup can offer.

Which is right for you

While it won't give you that warm "broadcast" tone, the extra sensitivity is a boon for casual use.  Just be mindful that it may also pick up more keyboard, controller, or background noise.

Streamer (AM8)

The Fifine AM8's dynamic capsule delivers that classic, warm "radio voice" instantly, with no processing needed.  It's a perfect fit for a boom arm setup, where its reduced sensitivity will help minimise distracting background sounds.

Podcaster (AM8)

The Fifine AM8's dynamic nature shines here and the XLR connector allows you to hook up multiple mics to an audio interface. You should position the MIC close on boom arms, and the dynamic mic can better isolate voices and reduce reverb, ensuring an iconic radio sound.

Conclusion

If you're serious about streaming or creating content for a big audience, and you are willing to invest in a boom arm, perhaps an audio interface later, the AM8 is a good choice. You'll get that warm, professional 'radio voice' and have room to grow your setup as your audience does.

For casual gamers focused on convenience, the AM6 is the clear winner. Its sensitive capsule means a powerful voice right from the desk. This makes it great for gamers who want great sound with minimal fuss with no extra gear needed!
